Science Village’ Program Conducted Under Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan St. Albert's College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Regional Centre, Port Blair (Sri Vijaya Puram), successfully organized the ‘Science Village’ program as part of the Government of India’s flagship initiative, Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan. The event took place at Chouldari village in the Ferrargunj Block of South Andaman. The program witnessed the esteemed presence of several dignitaries, including Ms. Lalita Tigga, Block Development Officer, Ferrargunj; Ms. Tapasi Saha, Panchayat President, Chouldari; Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Jacob, Regional Director, IGNOU; along with Dr. Uday Kumar and Dr. Sudarshan Raja, Assistant Regional Directors of IGNOU. Rev. Dr. Antony Thoppil, Manager of St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the pivotal role of science in driving sustainable community development. The academic team from the Department of Chemistry, St. Albert’s College, comprising Dr. Vijay John Gerson (Head of Department), Dr. Nisha V.S., and Dr. Krishna Kumar K.S., served as resource persons, leading hands-on sessions during the workshop. Chief Guest Ms. Lalita Tigga lauded the launch of the ‘Science Village’ program, describing it as a commendable step toward grassroots scientific empowerment. The workshop featured practical demonstrations on the preparation of household products such as soap, detergent, pain balm, and lotion. Resource persons explained the required raw materials, quantities, and safety measures involved in the production process. The initiative aims to promote the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), particularly to empower women and tribal community by fostering sustainable livelihood opportunities at this village od Andaman Nicobar Islands. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Uday Kumar, Assistant Regional Director of IGNOU and Coordinator of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan program, who acknowledged the contributions of all dignitaries, resource persons, and community participants.
