VISIT TO CHELLANAM FISHING HARBOR, BRACKISH WATER FISH & SHRIMP FARM VISIT AND FARMERS INTERACTION

As part of the BSc. Aquaculture Program (FYUGP), a field visit was organized on 09/08/2024 to Chellanam Harbour, followed by visits to a shrimp farm and a fish farm. This field visit was aimed at providing students with practical exposure to various aspects of the aqua farming and fisheries. The trip was designed to enhance their understanding of the sector and to allow them to interact with professionals actively engaged in aquaculture and fisheries. The first half of the day was spent at Chellanam Harbour, a bustling hub of fishing activity. Upon arrival, the students were greeted by the sight of numerous fishing boats with outboard engine at the harbour. The landing of several varieties of fish, give the students an opportunity to observe the diversity of marine life caught in the region. Among the various species, the bulk of the catches were of Anchovy, a species highly valued for its economic importance. The students were particularly intrigued by the range of fish species that were being sorted and auctioned. The students gained insights into the local fish market dynamics, pricing strategies and the economic significance of different fish species. The Second half of the day was utilized for visits to a brackish water shrimp farm owned by Mr. Babu K. A. and a brackishwater Fish Farm owned by Mr. Hanosh Augustin, the students had the opportunity to interact directly with the farmers. These interactions were particularly valuable, as they provided a platform for the students to ask questions and gain knowledge from the experiences of the farmers. At the shrimp farm, the students were introduced to the various stages of shrimp farming. The students had the opportunity to see the PL stages of shrimp in the nursery rearing stage (Hapa). The farmer shared valuable insights stocking, feeding, water exchange and also on the challenges faced in shrimp farming, such as disease management, environmental factors and market fluctuation. The visit to the fish farm was equally enlightening. The students were shown around the farm, the farmer explained different techniques, used in fish farming, such as pond preparation, stocking density, feed management and harvesting. The students were particularly interested in water management techniques and feeding practice. The field visit to Chellanam Fishing Harbour and the aquaculture farms was an enriching experience for the students of the BSc. Aquaculture Program. This experience will undoubtedly contribute to their academic and professional growth in the field of aquaculture.
