"The Invisible Danger of Microplastics" – Walkathon and Awareness Program by St. Albert’s College Students To raise awareness about the hazards of plastic pollution—particularly microplastics—on the environment and human health, second-year postgraduate Physics students of St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, in association with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), organized an awareness program at St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Vallarpadam. In the presence of Headmistress Ms. Kochuthresia T. J., an informative session was led by Assistant Professor Augustine Sumesh C J, Steering Committee Member of The Life Cycle Initiative hosted by UNEP. The session highlighted the dangers of microplastics, especially those found in low-cost bottled water available in the market. The interaction included engaging discussions, brief presentations, and practical guidance on adopting environmentally responsible lifestyles. Prior to the session, a walkathon was conducted from St. Albert’s College to the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary. The event was inaugurated by the College Manager, Rev. Fr. Antony Thoppil. College Principal Prof. Dr. Justin Rebello, Coordinators Dr. Sajeesh T. H. and Mr. Augustine Sumesh C J, Head of the Department Dr. Louie Frobel, and Student Coordinator Diya V. David also participated in the event. Through this initiative, students effectively conveyed the importance of environmental conservation and the urgent need to minimize plastic usage. The program exemplifies the college’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and its proactive role in promoting environmental education. The organizers hope this initiative will inspire both students and the broader public to adopt eco-conscious lifestyles.
