Drishya K Reghuvaran & Dr. Anisha S Student Coordinator: Sr. Shilda K Shajan Details of Resource Person(s): Name: Prof. (Dr.) K Madhusudhanan Designation: Head-Department of Botany, St. Albert’s College Attendance Details No of student Participants: 45 No of staff participants: 12 No of Participants from outside the college: 45 Report of the Activity The Department of Botany, St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, in collaboration with the Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Kerala (SPOK), celebrated World Environment Day 2025 on 5th June at the School for the Blind, Keezhmad, Aluva. This was the second activity conducted as part of the MoU signed between St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam and the Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Kerala (SPOK). The programme commenced at 11:45 a.m. with a prayer, followed by a welcome address by Fr. John K, Administrator of the School for the Blind. He shared valuable insights on the importance of nature conservation and the need for environmental awareness. The Keynote address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) K Madhusudhanan, Head- Department of Botany, St. Albert’s College (Autonomous). He emphasized on the significance of instilling a love for plants in children and highlighted the concept of a "Touch and Smell Garden" as an inclusive way for visually impaired students to connect with nature. The Presidential address was given by Shri. K. Hariram, President of SPOK, who appreciated the dedication of the teachers and the enthusiasm of the students. He acknowledged the meaningful impact that such initiatives have on inclusive education. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. T.J. John, Manager of the School for the Blind, who expressed his pride and happiness over the students’ achievements and the school’s role in providing them with opportunities. As part of the event, more than one lakh rupees worth of Braille kits and smartphones were distributed to eligible students under ADIP scheme, an initiative facilitated by SPOK. Shri. Shaju V. Cherian, Secretary of SPOK, delivered the felicitation address. He highlighted the various government schemes and privileges available to differently-abled children and emphasized the importance of making full use of these opportunities. An interactive session on medicinal plants followed, where students were introduced to plants identifiable by touch, smell, and taste. Postgraduate Botany students from St. Albert’s College guided the children in identifying these plants and explained their medicinal uses. The session proved to be both educational and engaging. The celebration concluded with cultural programmes performed by the students of both institutions. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Jiji Varghese, Headmistress of the School for the Blind, who expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the event. The programme concluded at 1:30 p.m.
