The Department of English at St. Albert’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, marked a momentous occasion with the inauguration of TEA@Alberts (The English Association) and the launch of Pusthakapeedika, a second-hand book sale, on 29th August 2024. The event, held at Mellano Hall, was a vibrant celebration of literature, social awareness, and community, showcasing the department’s commitment to fostering a dynamic and inclusive literary culture among its students. The day’s activities began with a flash mob performed by the students in Baccinelli Hall, which set an energetic and engaging tone for the event. This was followed by the inauguration of Pusthakapeedika, where Rev. Dr. Antony Thoppil, the Chairman, ceremoniously purchased the first book, officially initiating the book sale. This symbolic act highlighted the accessibility and importance of books as tools for education and empowerment. Following the flash mob and book sale inauguration, the attendees gathered in Mellano Hall for the formal program. Serena David served as the Master of Ceremonies, effectively guiding the event’s proceedings. The formal session began with a warm welcome address by Amrith Barid K.W., a second-year MA student, who expressed the department’s excitement and extended greetings to the assembled guests, faculty, and students. Rev. Dr. Antony Thoppil delivered the Chairman’s Address, where he emphasized the role of literary associations like TEA in enriching the intellectual and cultural life of the college. He commended the English Department for organizing such a significant event and encouraged students to participate actively in the association’s activities. Ms. Anuvindha Shaji, who addressed the gathering as the Head of the Department, spoke passionately about the department’s mission to cultivate a love for literature and critical thinking among its students. She also praised the collaborative efforts of the faculty and students in bringing TEA@Alberts to life, highlighting the importance of teamwork in achieving such milestones. The event’s highlight was the talk delivered by the chief guest, Ms. Aleena Aakasamittai. In her powerful and thought-provoking speech, Ms. Aleena discussed what it means to be a woman Dalit activist in Kerala. She shared her experiences and insights on the challenges and triumphs of being a voice for the marginalized in a society that often overlooks their struggles. Following the chief guest’s talk, the official inauguration of TEA@Alberts took place, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the English Department. Dr. Nisha Thomji Varghese then declared the office bearers for the 2024-2025 academic year: 1. Riya Mariam Binu (II MA) - President 2. Azar P.A (III B.A) - Vice President 3. Rememberme Nongtdu (II B.A) - Secretary 4. Felna Mrithul Felix (I BA) – Joint Secretary 5. Literary Coordinators – Naomi Sosa Yakoob (I MA) and Ann Bertha Thomas (III BA) 6. Arts Coordinators – Fajinsha (I MA) and Gopukrishna H (III BA). These students were entrusted with leading the association in its future endeavors, with their roles recognized as vital to the association’s success. A special moment in the program was the presentation of a memento to Gopu Krishna, acknowledging his significant achievements and contributions to the department. This was followed by a solo song rendition by Adhithyan P. A. of II B.A English, whose performance added a touch of artistry to the event, captivating the audience. Before the event concluded, a memento was presented to the chief guest, Ms. Aleena Aakasamittai, by Rev. Dr. Antony Thoppil, as a token of appreciation for her inspiring and enlightening presence. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Ann Bertha Thomas of III B.A English, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the event’s success, including the faculty coordinators, student organizers, and participants. The faculty coordinators for this event were Ms. Nikita John, Dr. Nisha Thomji Varghese, and Ms. Anuvindha Shaji, whose guidance was instrumental in ensuring the smooth execution of the event.
